Went to the show on Sat night, expectations were high eventhough Legends like Alaap & Sahotas were ignored and ultimately came out thinking........it could have been much better given the line up.
The likes of Parminder Azaad, Apna Sangeet & Premi were awful and should retire gracefully. I swear if I hear Sardara singing Soho Rd again I'll take him to the barbers myself and get him a short back n sides.
Venue was good and 90% packed so the audience is there n willing to pay top dollar but only DCS, Malkit Singh & Bhujangey Group really stood out with their performances which were truly awesome because they stood up to the likes of M'Box and demanded to play with their OWN live bands and that's what makes these guys true Legends.
Don't get me wrong the session group which played for Shaktee, Heera, Apna, Safri, Pardesi etc.... were good but the music sounded repetitive and didn't have the bands own authority on the music that was being churned out.
All in all M'Box & BritAsia needed to go that extra mile and let the bands perform with their own members, then it would have an exceptional evening.
Oh yeh one last moan, £9 a flippin double vodi !

All in all M'Box & BritAsia needed to go that extra mile and let the bands perform with their own members, then it would have an exceptional evening. Oh yeh one last moan, £9 a flippin double vodi ! Have to dissagree with you there bro. I was also at the show and thought it was a fantastic night. Got to give credit to M'Box and Brit Asia for listening to the fans and making it LIVE!!! They were originally going to make it a PA but do to public demand (and my brothers constant nagging to Kamran) they decided to make it live. I agree that Parminder and Premi were a let down because they were doing a PA and I have seen both bands live before and they are AWSOME!!! But I had Premi as a surprise act just recently at my 1st wedding anniversary party and they were a PA then but they rocked it! I have to disagree about Apna Sangeet though caus those guys stole the show. The crowd went wild when they came on and both Apna Sangeet and Premi are really down to earth people kinda like your "Gurudwara waley uncles" The point about Alaap and Sahotas, well Amarjit Sidhu did say that they tried to get them but they couldnt. I can bet Alaap wouldnt perform unless they were treated "supertars" and got top billing and I know that Sahotas just kinda keep themselves to themselves and dont really interact with anyone (seen Sahotas live and apart from Raj, the others dont even smile let alone talk), so to be honest its their own fault that they weren't there. The one thing I really dont agree with is that DCS and Malkit Singh played with there own bands is seen as a good thing. The session band themselves consisted of members who i would say are some of the best in the industry, Bhota and Harry on Keys and Juggy and Tabla and Dholki etc. They have all played with bands at some point before so they know what the melodies are like and to be honest they reproduced a really good sound which at times sounded just like the original on the tape. The session band would have done all the singers justice and its a logistical nightmare to have to keep changing the band (they had 13 acts in total and it is Alexander Theatre and not bhangra gig). The fact that DCS and Malkit played with their own bands actually shows how egotistical they actually are. Lets not forget that this event was going to be a PA when they all agreed to do it so if they really wanted to "stand up to M'BOX" they could have kicked up a fuss at that point but they didnt bother. Malkit Singh didnt even bother to come out of his dressing room to take pictures and sign autographs whilst everyone else did. They were all asking for Malkit and his band kept saying he's gone home and then i saw him peeping out of his dressing room window. And DCS, what can i say apart from that they a bunch of P**CKS coming from an ex-DCS fan who's family have booked them 3 times to perform live only to have them cancel all 3 times with only 2 days notice. You say that you're tired of listen to Soho Rd but at least thats a dancefloor track unlike Shin singing Kangna unplugged for like the umpteenth time (why would you sing that at a BHANGRA show) Hope you read this Shin caus you really P***ED me off. Dont forget that you are only S, it was D and C that made you liked by the masses. Overall a fantastic effort by all involved and judging by the crowd reaction the majority had a great time. This is they way bhangra events should always be, LIVE!!! Only gripe on my part was the lack of security not stopping people dancing in the aisle and blocking our views at times and also why they served alcohol caus that just made matters worse when you tried to stop them. And what was with all the people running on stage and that girl touching Malkits feet? Plonkers Excellent night and looking forward to more. Remember this is 2011 and not Bhangra Night from 91 and I recall Alaap and Sahotas were not at that either.

Great recap. Would have been awesome to see that show.
This may be a stupid question, but what's a "PA"? I'm assuming thats when the singers do not have a band and just sing live to their actual music played by a DJ.
I wish some of these old school bands would perform here in America. I do remember seeing Premi live back in '95 here in Califorina. And I have to say, they kicked ass. The band was phenomenal. I rem they had this young kid playing the dhol, he went off. Premi Johal was hammered out of his mind, but he still put on a good show.

This may be a stupid question, but what's a "PA"? I'm assuming thats when the singers do not have a band and just sing live to their actual music played by a DJ. You are correct thats exactly what a PA is. A Live PA is when the singer is actually singing over the recorded track and a standard PA is when the singer is just miming over the recorded track. You're right Premi really are good when they are live. Just to let you guys know how down to earth they are, my brother booked Premi as a surprise act for my anniversary caus he new i liked old skool bhangra music and he told them they were going to be a surprise so he would hide them in the back so no one could see them. On the day of the anniversary it was snowing and really cold so we arrived late (including my brother). My bro went to find Premi to get them settled and apologise for the delay and when he found them they were sitting in the car on a freezing day. My bro asked why they didnt come in and the dudes said "we know its a surprise and we got here early so not to dissapoint anyone. We stayed in the car so no one could see us and we'd rather be cold than spoil the surprise" Respect to these guys for that! Thats what i call commitment On another note we also had Pardesi as a LIVE band and they performed as the New Pardesi Music Machine for the first time in many years. They also rocked the show and we have also booked Apna Sangeet many times before so if anyone is looking for a live band to book for a wedding and dont want the artists giving "nakhre" over every little thing then i would highly reccomend Apna Sangeet, Pardesi and Premi. These guys performed for hours without complaining and peformed every song we asked them to. They even rehearsed the songs they didnt know or ones they dont perform that often. Very professional bands!!!

Kiddan people!
I was also at the show (with as007, as he is my brother ;p) & just to echo what he said; THE SHOW WAS AWESOME!!
As soon as I heard of the concert, we decided we were going to go but were very dissapointed when I found out that all the acts were going to perform as PA's! I couldn't understand why anyone would want to organise a 'Legends of Bhangra Show' with all The Legends performing as PA's. I felt it would've been an insult to them & told the acts that myself as well.
I give maximum respect to Britasia & M'Box for listening to the request of all the fans (including me & my bro) & changing the show from being a set of PA's to everyone performing LIVE!!
The live band consisted of:
Harry Matharu & Boota Jagpal - Keys Juggy Rihal - Tabla & Dholki Happy Bain - Drums Prem - Bass Steve - Guitar 2 singh's whose name I don't know but they were good - Dholis
Ninder performed tabla with Achanak & his son played the dhol. Ninder still kicks it on the tabla.
Bhupinder played the violin with Heera & added that special touch.
Malkit Singh & DCS peformed with their own live bands, for reasons only known to them, but it was fine I guess. Malkit was good, but I have lost all respect for DCS so not going to say much about them.
Bhujangy performed with their own dholi (also leader of Eternal Taal Dhol Group) & backing vocals by their own band. They performed well.
PREMI & Azaad were the only LIVE PA's for one reason or the other.
I think the session band did excellently in lieu of the fact that the decision to go live was only made about 2 weeks before the show. And to rehearse close to 26-30 songs in 2 weeks is a great achievment & they deserve full credit for that They were a big hand in making the night a success in my opinion!!
The order of performances (if I remember correctly was as follows):
SHAKTEE (great opening act) MESHI (very powerful performance) ACHANAK (brilliant to see them live in the UK after so long & great intro) SAFRI (reminded me of the old uni days) PARMINDER AZAAD (would have been better with the the live band) DCS (the less said about them the better. Have lost all respect for them, just like they have no respect for their fans) PARDESI (still have the pardesi music machine feel & were excellent. Silinder's little rendition about live music was great as well) PREMI (still the king of live PA's. Are good with a live band as well) APNA SANGEET (all I can say is that they are the best bhangra band in the world) BHUJANGY (true legends & still going strong) HEERA (a pleasant surprise) MALKIT SINGH (had the longest performance & didn't let down).
The medley at the end with all of the bands was good as well. This was all a live PA. Would've been interesting to see this with the live band as well.
HS TALWAR couldn't perform his individual live slot due to personal issues, but managed to perform as part of the medley which was good.
The whole show was hosted by AMARJIT SIDHU, who in my opinion (and I'm sure a lot of other people's as well) is a true legend in himself & he was the best choice of host for this show.
SUKHI BART made a brief appearance on stage as well & was his usual self. Lively & funny.
I agree that alcohol shouldn't be served at these type of family events as it ruins it for people that have come with their families, especially when people keep dancing in the aisles & blocking everyone's view!!
All in all, it was an excellent night. To see all the legends all under one roof, performing live & singing their greatest hits (I didn't mind listening to soho road again), was a once in a lifetime experience. I'm sure these kind of events will take place a lot more now, so I would recommend anyone who missed this event, to try & go to one of the next ones for a great night out with the family!!
WELL DONE TO EVERYONE INVOLVED WITH THE ORGANISATION OF THE SHOW, AS WELL AS ALL THE PERFORMERS!!

Agree, Amarjit Sidhu great host and a true gent. I also heard beforehand the show was only going to be PA's and I rang M'box to give them my two bob's worth but I guess everyone who rang to complain made a real difference because they did a u-turn due to the public not accepting paying good money for PA's so well done to everyone who made the effort., Birmingham's Public Power at it's best !
I didn't see any loutish behaviour tbh where we were seated but can't comment for the rest of the arena. There were 7 of us, all lads in their mid 30's and we had a few drinks eventhough ridiculously priced but we for sure weren't a nuisance to anyone. There were a few couples sitting by us but mainly a mixed crowd and we respected them all. Guess you guys were unlucky and had a few junglee's by you who obviously couldn't handle the liquer !
Gotta back DCS up though, we've booked them twice recently and each time Shin and his band have totally smashed it (no one can match them live I'm sure you'll agree) and entertained us like Legends should.
All in all was a really good show but I for one wouldn't have minded waiting for a few mins for the bands to change over so they could perform with their own musicians and add that extra authenticty of their own unique sounds.
Maybe next time...............

Kiddan Rock n Rolla,
Good to know that you also phoned up to get the show changed from PA's to LIVE! You're the same age group as me a my bro, hence the reason why we all wanted it live ; ) I ain't from birmingham though bruv, so you brummies can't take all the credit! LOL!
I agree, it would have been awesome to see all the singers perform with their own live bands, however, I was just glad that it was changed from PA's to live & I'm sure you agree the session band did a good job.
With regards to DCS; I'm sure there are a lot of people who have had an ok experience with them, but with regards to me & my family, it's never been the case. Me & my bro have been great fans of theirs since we were kids. We have all their original vinyls, cassettes, cd's, dvd's, etc, and rated them as a live band, however, when I booked them for my bro's 1st wedding anniversary party, they cancelled on me 2 days before the party & told me to book a dj, claiming shin had a bad throat (I've known them to do this 3 times). This coming from a live band when all the industry is complaining that people are not booking a live band, came as a shock & big let down. They weren't willing to book an alternative artiste if it was going to cost them more money, when in reality that would've been the professional thing to do & would've shown that they actually respected their fans who made them famous in the first place. In the end I had to sort out a live band in 1 day, which ended up being PARDESI MUSIC MACHINE & they absolutely smashed the party!!! A very good live band.
DCS are a big no no for us now!
APNA SANGEET, PARDESI, ACHANAK & PREMI are some of the best live bands I've seen recently.
I'm glad you wasn't one of the junglee's, as you put it! LOL! The people dancing in the aisles really spoiled it for a while, but the security eventually sorted it out.
Can't wait to see it when it comes on TV & hopefully there will be more shows like it!
Keep bhangra a-LIVE brother!!

i went to the show and i really enjoyed it. i thought the best acts were dcs and malkit singh, but the other acts i.e apna sangeet, safri, pardesi and meshi eshara were also good.
in my opinion i don't think its a bad thing if malkit singh and dcs performed with their own bands because if jazzy b or sukshinder shinda were performing most likely they would have performed with thier own band too.
the let down of the show was azaad and premi by doing their pa performance, i was really looking forward to seeing premi live as the last time i saw them which was at the midlands v london gig back in 2001 at birmingham they smashed it live.
it was good seeing pardesi music machine back together again performing after such a long absence, hopefully now they can release some new material.
but a big up to moviebox and britasia for keeping the show live, hopefully their will be a part 2 and this time have the sahotas, alaap, surjit anakhi, dippa satrang and other old skool artists on the agenda.
overall a good show and a good night.

I went to the midlands v london gig as well, but from what I can remember, they performed as a live PA at that gig as well, but had 2 live dhol players with them. They were brilliant though. To be honest Premi are the only live PA which I rate, because they normally have live dholis with them & Jassi also plays live tumbi as well. It just kind of works. They do this live dhol & tumbi act & then sing free style boliyan which makes any party they are at rock. They're good with a live band as well.
Do you remember 'Holle Holle' at the midlands v london gig? They had a full live band with them. They were awesome.
I was speaking to Ninder the day after The Legends show & told him that most of the people at the show were probably 30 years of age & over as this was our era of music & from all the people posting in this thread, I think I was write.
Just goes to show that us guys still know how to party! LOL!
Would be good to see Anakhi & Dippa with full live band after ages. Alaap are also good live. I've seen Sahotas performing plenty of times but their best performance was at a gig they did in 2000 (I think) at The Ritz in Manchester, where they performed a full live set & sang a medley of all of their old songs. Did anyone else go there?
Pardesi are releasing a new dharmic album called 'Ek Onkar' & then a bhangra album as well.
Achanak are relasing 'Dhol & Tumbi' in August.
Shaktee are releasing in July & XLNC also have a new album coming out.
Parminder has just released an album and KS Bhamra & SS Gill have both just released Mr. Makhna & Bas Kar respectively.
Premi had a track on Hyper towards the end of last year & Heera featured on PBN's album.
I saw Bhujangy at a Vaisakhi Mela in Manchester about a month ago & aparently they also have a new album coming out.
Safri has just released 'Putt Saradaran Da' & I'm pretty sure Malkit will release something soon!!
Looks like the last half of 2010 & the whlole of 2011 are the years of The Legends!!
Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrah!

My guess is they'll wait until xmas or new years eve and cut it down to 2hrs for coverage. I'd rather buy the whole show if they were to sell it on DVD.

Anyone watch this yesterday? It was shown in full on britasia at 7pm. The only thing missing were a few tracks by malkit.
Did anyone who didn't go to the actual show, watch it y-day? What was your opinion of the event?
Personally, I enjoyed re-living the experience.
