Album: Me Against Myself
Artist: Jay Sean
Label: Virgin Records Limited
Release date: October 25th 2004
The countdown to the release of Jay Sean’s debut album began a long time ago. It is amazing to think how much of an impact he has already made in the music world without the aid of an album. But the wait is nearly over. The fact is that we have never seen anything like Jay Sean before. A phenomenal songwriter, a unbelievable singer/rapper, a star performer ……and he is Asian! Indeed, we have never before seen anything like Jay Sean.
On the album ‘U Don’t Know Me’ has a stevie wonder sample (superstition) accompanying Jay’s raw vocal ability. There’s something about this track that gets your head swaying from side to side. It’s a great ‘mainstream’ opener. ‘One night’ features ‘Juggy D’ from the ‘Rishi Rich Project‘. This one has more of an R’n’B flavour to it.. Again Jay Sean demonstrates his amazing song writing talent to a tee.
For me, the track that stands out most is ‘Stolen’. It’s a song that is all about the lyrics. The track contains a sample of the classic bollywood song ‘Churalia Hai’. I was fortunate to see Jay Sean perform this track recently and the emotion he put into this track was mind-blowing. An inspired piece of work.
Other tracks to look out for on the album are the surprising ‘Ramita Jogi’, which contains a sample from a song featured in the Bollywood movie ‘Taal‘, the UK top 6 track ‘Eyes on you’ and the comical ‘Who Is Kamaljit?’.
Jay Sean is about to take the Music world by storm with this album. It is a groundbreaking album. Yes, Asian artist’s have been in the mainstream before, but no one has ever produced an album like this before. What people must remember is that this is not a ‘Bhangra’ album. Nor is it a ‘Hindi’ album. It’s an album that will, quite rightly, sit alongside other mainstream albums from established stars.
And the great thing is, this is just the beginning.
