Shaanti has long since been recognised as an UK institution that promotes innovative and diverse line-ups and sounds. Over the many years, the most prestigious names from the electronic musical spectrum have graced the decks, leaving their dent on The Factory’s renowned dance-floor. The trend continues as this month two of the hottest DJ talent, Tigerstyle and Eagle-i headline.
Providing some of the hardest breaks the UK has yet to hear, these DJ’s and producers has been the apple of the Asian music industry eye for nearly 9 years now, and is one of the most recognised names in the scene. Having toured and worked with singers and musicians from all over the globe, Tigerstyle are a force to be reckoned with when it comes to Asian sounds. Known for the experiment that uses the full vocal content of Punjabi folk singing, recorded over new beats and production made by using hip-hop, drum-and-bass and modern Asian dance forms has helped position them as one of the main contenders in the industry.
Most are already familiar with Tigerstyle as the mastermind behind Bikram Singh’s American Jugni, which helped build the guys profile as legendary figures, musicians and producers. Since then the Tigerstyle brand has expanded ten-folds across the world and with the launch of their radio show on the BBCAN Glasgow, these guys have become sought-after radio presenters and music super-stars. When they are not presenting, the two brothers, can be found tucked away in their studio master-minding and putting together the final touches to their forthcoming album.
Their style can vary from dark, hard, and moody drum and bass, to the smooth and minimal, or energetic Eastern dance floor sounds of Bhangra-come-bashment, as well as old school Hip-Hop beats. As they continue to blaze into the future at a furious pace, they’ll be controlling the needles on da dance-floor. While the next act Eagle-i from Sutra Funk is one of the hottest Asian Underground DJs to come out off Europe.
Having first made a name for himself as a genre-hoping DJ, with an ear for culture-clashed-mixes, raging from Asian underground bass-lines to electronic breaks has gained this DJ, a sound reputation as a prodigy on the decks. Away from the decks Eagle-i promotes and runs the successfully "Sutra Funk, " a monthly Asian Underground club night in Amsterdam, and currently has been experimenting in the studio laying down some beats. Having produced "Nagins Spell" a break-beat track last year (unreleased), and most recently the additive "French Kiss" featuring Celine Wadier, an eclectic single which fuses French and Asian vibes in-captured in lashings of Electro. On the night he’ll be firing-up a super-sharp-shooter of Asian underground, Arabic drum-n-bass and Eastern Breaks in The Factory (Room 1) with Manga from Galaxy, and Rich Reason.
The night also sees the return of Classical Electronika Live. Moving away from the DJ vibe, every month Shaanti pay homage to the UK’s finest percussionists, live artists and beat-masters around. Each month, artists and musicians will jam together for a genre-defying, eclectic showcase featuring, live Tabla, Flute, Bongos, Congos & the Druba… entwisted with influences from India, Africa, Jamaica and Middle Eastern motherland vibes. This month they’ll be showcasing Pritpal Rai (Tabla) and Hiren.
Percussionist and producer Pritpal Rai is an artist who breaks new-ground in music, as he unveils the spiritual essence of ancient-modern tribal rhythms into modern Asian dance forms. His compositions are drawn from diverse cultures around the world to which he creates unique tribal-grooves that truly define World Beats.
While Hiren uses the spirit and language of jazz with the sounds and styles of hip-hop, Indian classical and folk, western classical, rock, pop and avant-garde: lyrical melodies and searching harmonies, down to earth directness and psychedelic, ambient introspection within his percussion set. While in Room 2 rock out to Funk, Drum and Breaks and Hip-Hop beats spun by MSC, G-Funk, J-Money, Parm Panesar and Hanz.
A truly jaw dropping line-up that is the only fitting celebration for the UK home of Eastern Electronica, Fusion Break and Broken Beats.
