I would reject a place @ Oxford even if I had the brains to get in...my cousin sister went there and shes really different these days..back in the day she used to be proper desi gal..into her bhangra etc..now..well she uses words i aint ever heard of, she eats roti with a knife & fork , she has no indian friends and i suspect shes lesbian..i blame Oxford.

hey jasi_bham... i wana do medicine n went t luk at bham uni.. relly liked it bt am jus worrid dat i mite nt get in... wat a-levels did u take? and wat grades did u get... i also found out dat they luk at gcse grades and want at least 5 a*z... n i jus gt straight Az shud i still go for it???

Yea i think u definately shud m8!!!!!
The prospectus at bham states that you need 5 A* to C grades, but they do prefer you to have A*/As at GCSEs and if u had straigh As ull b fine there. You are required to do biology and chemistry a level as part of the entry requirements....i did biology, chemistry, maths and physics AS level and got 4 As. The standard offer at bham uni is AAB, which is quite high as the majority of london universities want ABB. To b honest, its not worth applying for medicine unless u r predicted ABB....wivout sounding too harsh....if ur grades r lower its unlikely ull get a offer. I also applied to UCL, Imperial and Nottingham and bham was my highest offer. Out of the ones that i applied to, i think bham was the easiest to get into. The interview was definately the best.....they ask really straight forward questions....such as y do u want to do medicine wot can u offer to this university work experience and they also asked me if i knew the stages a post grad takes to becoming a consultant (pre reg, SHO, registrar, etc.....which i recommend u to no) they also asked if i knew wot specialisations GPs are recommended to undertake in their rotations (peadiatrics, geriatrics and obstretics and gynae)
I found that the interviews at UCL, Imperial and nottingham are a lot more medically based rather than bout you and ur own experiences and thats one of the main reasons i chose bham. Bham is definately a great uni to come to....r u plannin on living away?? the halls here are preety nice....standard uni accomodation and being a campus based uni unlike the london ones....its ot a really gud uni atmosphere.
The course here is also really gud....i think bhams in the top 20. The course in continuous assessment so basically ur assessed throughout the year....i had exams in october, january and may. U also have continual tests and presentations.....for me personally thats a gud way to work....bcos it forces you to work throughout the year otherwise u can tend to doss. They might mention continuous assessment in ur interview so make sure u no bout it.....readin the prospectus and information bout ur course b4 the interview is a good idea. I do have one criticism bout the course here and that is that we dont do dissection instead we have 3 prosection sessions in a year!!! which is not gud compared to ova unis. Prosection is basically lookin at a dead body thats already been cut up....instead of dissecting it urself....but i have heard that prosection is a more effective method and ova unis r abolishing dissection. Anova gud thing bout the course is that its system based.....mention that in ur interview....so basically u do the heart and then the GIT and then respiratory....etc. And we also have clinical exposure early on in the course which makes it a little bit more interesting.
And bham in general is a great place to be.....its got plenty to do and if ur into goin out.....its got gud clubs....im from london and i prefer the clubbing scene in bham!!! If clubbings not ur thing theres plenty of things to do.....and loadsa societies and events organised by the uni!!! And cos its got few unis ere its packed out wiv students!!! If u want ne advice on halls if ur moving out just ask!!! Woteva happens say NO to tennis courts!!!
I hope all that helps you....god my hands are hurting now....im currently doin my first year exams and all i can say is medicine is a TOUGH course and a HUGE commitment so only go for it if ur 100% sure!!!! wish u all the best mate and if theres nething else u want to no just ask me!!!! Best of Luck!!! ;D

oh sumthing else i remembered......have u heard of a book called 'getting into medicine'....its really gud....gives u examples of interview questions, help wiv writing ur personal statement, interview technique and an update on new medical advances....its also a gud idea to look at sum student bmjs or have a collection of newspaper clippings bout medical things!! some interviewers pick up on topical issues....i got asked alot bout HIV programmes and fetal abnormalities at my interviews last year cos it had been on the news. Anova gud idea is thinkin bout goin on the medlink or medsim courses....medical skools luv stuff like that and ull meet loadsa of ova medics that mite end up goin to ur uni....i met a couple of my mates from there!! Hope this all helps u!!!! TC

Awwww no probs mate....my exams r nearly ova now....only one more to go!!!! Oh moving away from home is great....u will have such a laff if u do!!! You do miss ur family tho but u get used to not seeing them all the tym.....first term i missed them loads n i still do but u get used to it.....n since i moved away im so much closer to my mom dad n bro!!!! N dnt wori bout making new friends cos everyone is in the same boat n everyones just as scared as each other!!! One thing id say is wen u come to uni....make an effort.,...got n talk to ppl thats the only way u make mates!!! For the first term i was chattin to every random i met n i wudnt have met some of my best mates if i hadnt!!!! At bham all the medics r really friendly n our yr gets on wiv each other really well n the older yrs r lovely too....always willing to help!!!! N dnt wori bout makin strong relationships....in the first few weeks id met ppl i knew id stay in touch wiv all my life.....wereva u go u can make mates.....just make sure u make an effort wen u go to uni......dnt me shy n try n hide in the corner.....go out there n chat to ppl!!!!! Gud luk n tell me how it all goes!!!
