Why Do Punjabi boys & girls cut their hair and go against basic tenet of Sikhi?

I think it's horrible that a lot of people dont think its a good idea to shave if it makes you feel more clean. Of course there are people of all religions who dont feel the need and thats their decision, but like wise if you do feel its better for you then you should do it.

the question your asking is wrong, as not all sikhs are punjabi and not all punjabis cut/shave/trim their hair. my answer to your question would be 'as a result of western influnces' that is obvious.

Remember Panjabi is our culture according to Sikh rehat we gurls should not shave our hair my hindu mates who are panjabi too shave/wax there legs. While I prefer to go by the gurus teachings and let my hair grow!

My view- i think personal hygiene/health reasons r the reason to break sikhi rules. I mean sikhi also teaches us to keep clean, and remain pure (both internally and externally)...so we cut our nails, use soap (chemical substances), take goliyan (chemicals- unnatural)...and shave/wax/remove hair as part of our health and hygiene. I spose it does sound like a lame excuse, but it makes sense. but i dont think that a woman removing hair is a reason for sikh men to think that it's for the wrong reasons- for example, just cuz girls shave, it may not be to attract men or wear a mini skirt- it cud simply be to feel clean and comfortable.

lol! well i wouldnt know- i dont do mini skirts! at the end of the day- its human choice. girls who wear mini skirts to start with are defferring sikhi by baring 'sacred' flesh to public, so removing hair would also be condemned as bad. i believe that although its really bad, and i am ashamed of it- we all (men and women) break sikhi rules every day, apart from people who have devoted their lives to our religeon. from not covering out heads, to wearing make-up, to drinking and the list goes on. i reckon that awareness is the most important thing- to teach sikh people (especially children) whats right and whats wrong...from there they can make the decisions alone, and society will not be the one to blame- the individual will be for making the decision to go against sikhi ruling. sorry- essay alert!

summan - uve got really good opinions, well mayb the word good isnt correct, but what i would say is that i agree with most if not all that u say.
talking about panjabi girls i think is dangerous, cuz girls that do or do not shave really falls to religious beliefs.
hindus - i dont think there is anything for or against, please correct me if im wrong.
muslims - its quite an important part of islam to shave as its seen to be hyginic. muslim guys n girls r supposed to shave their genital areas for the reason of hygine. same applys for armpits i think. however, i dont think the same applies for legs. i thought they shouldnt, again plz correct me if im wrong. but off the topic, according to islam; muslims girls should not wear trousers/jeans, they r supposed to wear skirts (not mini!)
sikh - funny im a sikh n really into sikhi n i actually dont know the right answer. i do know of sikh females that dont shave cuz of the religious reasons, but i guess summan has a point about hygine, but i guess it could be argued that not shavin ur legs is not unhyginic. i dont know...

im a sikh gal....n i do shave n cut my hair!! I know i prob shudnt be going down toni n guy n choppin my hair off but i hate it wen ppl do judge me cos i do have short hair!!! Wen i tell ppl im sikh n i have cut hair they assume that i drink, i eat meat - that i go against every single principle of being a sikh but i dont drink n i am veggie!!! But i do have to say shaving is a must - every women shud have a venus (a pink one)!!! N if u ask me it does take a lot of dedication to follow every rule down to the T - so we gotta have some leeway!!!

lol....interesting points jas.
in terms of leaway, well i disagree. no matter how practical Sikhi is, it still has rules, which to be a true Sikh, you must follow.
im not perfect Sikh, not at all, but i admit it. i wont say "im almost perfect" or "im perfect except for a few things". its either on or not, knwo what i mean?
fine u cut ur hair, n as u know thats against Sikhi, but thats upto u. Sikhi is not about holding ppl down, Sikhi is a way of living and i guess holding as much as u can is good, no1 is perfect, but yes some r better followers that others.
sorry, im kinda dragging off the actual topic....

I totally agree wiv u jatt.....n i totally respect ppl who can follow sikhi so strongly....i aint got to the stage where i can....mayb one day i will....i mean i never wore a kura until a yr ago cos i thought it had been turned into a fashion accessory but now i understand y sikhs wear it i wear one too.....n i aint got to the point where i cud keep my hair but i have gone wivout cuttin it for over 8 months which is a first for me....i do want to b recognised as sikh n am proud of my religion....now ive got to a stage where i understand it more n actually WANT to follow sikhi not becos i am being told i shud!!!
I never was really intorduced into religion by my family cos they aint too religious....but we all r veggie n t-totallers....but now i myself am takin an interest n i am goin to the gurudwara cos i want to not becos i have to go for a weddin or sumthin n my family r followin me too...me n my mum go listen to satsangs n kirtan.....but i think its only worth doin sumthin cos u want too NOT becos ur family or ova ppl r tellin u too!!! But yea gud on u for bein so dedicated...i hope i can say the same bout myself one day!!!

lol, im fallin in love with the way u talk lol.
jus read ur first paragraph yet n all i have to say is that is exactly what Sikhi is about. to learn the dharm n not jus follow it cuz we've been told to. i look upto urself hun.
bravo to the 2nd para too. hun, Sikhi is about a belief, its about living life to the potential we have, its about recognising the Waheguru WITHIN US!! we hear that Sikhi teaches that to us so many times, but we have still never been able to understand that.
follow ur heart, make an effort (ie do read books about Sikhi, also read what our Gurus have said about our religion) n all ur questions will be answered n as ive said before, ull realise the more u do that, that "hey...i believe in this too" well thats what i think ull do.
sorry...off the subject.
and dont u dare bring marriage into this thread too lol.
take care
