Hi, I just finished watching "This Is England" by Shane Meadows with my Dad, and he started telling me about the problems he had in Slough as a child and later on as a grown up from "Skinheads" and other gangs.
Eventually we came to the topic of Sher-E-Punjab, my father had hear rumours of the group and after a bit of research I found out that the group had now disbanded and that once it stood to protect Sikh families and girls.
I live in an area with a small Sikh population far away from Birmigham, Southall etc so I'm pretty detached from this sort of stuff, and only know stories from relatives, I was wondering if any of you guys could give me more insight into this " gang".
Were they "hoodlums" or "righteous"? I've seen many people argue that they were wrong in their actions simply because they were monay, I (being a mona) personally do not believe in that, but I was looking for more well informed insight.

They used to be a force in gang wars back in the day but not anymore. These days its just a few kids running around calling themselves sp, nothing serious. One story I know of was when a bunch of muslims gathered at some college in slough called the chalvey gang and started harrassing sikhs at the campus. SP from southall heard about this and they went to chalvey neighbourhood, beat the gang up, smashed their cars and houses and flying sikh flags. This was in 1997. Then coincidently after that vaisakhi fell on the same day as eid and both sides were getting ready to have a big gang fight but the police heard about this and over 90 ppl were arrested for carrying weapons.

lol that was no story, it was true ^
They set a couple of cars on fire too. Muslims took revenge by nearly killing some sikh boy on his bike. They shoved him to the ground, smashed bricks on him and then smashed a glass lucozade bottle over his head.

They are done and dusted. They were a good force in the late 80's early 90's, my family were involved during this period. Most married had kids and moved on. It was reformed in the late 90's by the Kandola's who were more interested in narcotics than protection. The final straw came when they were called to Smethwick Gurdwara to ensure a corrupt committee stayed in power. The khalsa Fauj, boss stall, and Babbar Khalsa Coventry were already angry, and when all these parties clashed at the handsworth mela, it was the shere-e-punjab who were finally disbanded. Tari Kandola was chased out the park with kirpans and he let hes father get stabbed by BOSS singhs. Thats pretty much the rise fall rise fall of SP Birmingham branch
