To mark the 2004 Vaisakhi celebrations Harbhajan Mann embarked on a tour of the U.K. Harbhajan Mann is not only a talented vocalist but also a very successful actor as many witnessed in his hit movie 'Jee Ayan Nu'. Having already performed in London, Gravesend and Wolverhampton, the tour's last stop was in Leicester at the Demontfort Hall. I had heard great reviews from many in the business about his performances so was eager to check it out for myself.
Having got their a bit late (Desi Timing), I took my seat as Harbhajan Mann was in full flow. The hall was {as far as I could see}, 95-98% full. I later learnt that it was a 100% sellout. Proof that Harbjhajan Mann can pull in a crowd which is the mark of a great entertainer. He belted out hit songs such as 'Jag Jeondeyan De Mele', 'Haaye Meri Billo' and 'Vadaiyan Ji Vadaiyan' to the approval of the crowd. His voice sounded as good , if not better live and you could tell he was not holding back. He demonstrated how versatile he is as a vocalist when halfway through the concert he slowed things down by singing tribute songs to 'Mirza' and a very moving song about the role and love of a mother to a child. Emotions were running high as he gave a great performance to capture the moment and hearts of everyone in the audience. For me this was one of the great highlights of the show.
Harbhajan Mann throughout his performance was shaking hands and posing for photos showing his appreciation for his fans. Some people who were sitting in the front were getting very annoyed with people standing in front of them to take photos as they were obstructing their view, {maybe something to look at for future shows}. He came across as a very humble man with no ego whatsoever. He was willing to interact with the people in attendance rather than just sing his songs to them. Another highlight of the concert was when Harbhajan Mann called his son on to the stage. I don't know his official age, but I'm guessing he is 11/12 years old. To the surprise of many, the little boy then performed one of Habhajan's biggest hits' 'Oye Hoye'. It was a touching moment as you saw a proud father watching , willing his son on. The expression on Harbhajan Mann face was of pure joy as his son almost stole the show!
Harbajan Mann ended the show with his first big hit 'Chithiyee ni Chitiyee', even then he was reluctant to go asking for 'Just five more minutes please' to the promoters and hall management. It seemed that he enjoyed the show just as much as the people in the audience and had to be almost dragged of the stage he was so much into it. After admitting he just had to go because of his security team he confirmed he will be back in concert in the U.K in two years time. Overall a highly successful tour was brought to an end on a very high note. The bad news is if you couldn't make any of the shows, you have to wait two years. Next time I strongly suggest you catch it.
