marrying a sikh is one story, teaching your kids punjabi and sikhi is another.
Just cos you marry a sikh, dont mean your kids are gonna know everything bout sikhi, its your responsibility to teach them. Not saying thats what your saying, but i think that SOME parents in this country have failed to teach their kids bout sikhi.
Not all but many have, i mean how many kids can actually read and write punjabi?
I dont expect people to agree with me, but in my opinion there are probably more non religious sikhs in this country than religious, and i think this is an issue to think about.
But i got big respect for the people that do actually marry a sikh and teach their kids sikhi too, instead of marrying a sikh just for the sake of it.
Basically my point is are sikhs in this country religious enuf???
Maybe that should be a new thread...

Sexyjatti u are so annoying. I am sikh also but u really make a point of acting like a militant on every post to do with sikhism! And stick your point of view on mixed marriages! I think its good you are a strong believer but u seriously do get carried away! Our religion is 1beautiful religion but are all the people?! Did the Guru teach you to be a militant aswell?!

these days though i dont even think our parents know much about Sikhi, they make out they do coz thats what they've been taught by our grandparents but i dont actually think its sikhi they've been taught its just general indian tradition.
Of course on some aspects it is Sikhi, like they've been taught about our Guru Ji's etc, but then when u got them talking about castes and what to do and not to do, its more of a indian tradition trend not Sikhism. If you know what i mean.
I know ever family is different coz you got the families that are fully into Sikhism and the ones who are moderately into it and the ones that are only into it when they feel like it or are in need of guidance. But surprisingly they all work in the same way when it comes to traditional values, coz that is what they have been really taught not Sikhism.

"all sikhs should learn punjabi and teach their children punjabi and sikhi"
^^I think ul find the three main teaching of Guru Nanak Dev Ji was: * Naam Japp: Chanting the Holy Name and thus remembering God at all times. *Kirat Karô: Earning/making a living honestly, without exploitation or fraud * Vaṇḍ Chakkô: Sharing with others, helping those with less who are in need. Teaching your children punjabi is not a religious teaching from the Guru's. The Gurus' have infact said that you should learn Gurmukhi in order to read and understand the words of the Guru Granth Sahib Ji.

Well I am glad my parents have taught me traditional values. ;D I have seen soem families that know a lot about sikhi, or "act" sikh ie do paat, go gurdwara etc, but they lack traditional values and are out of touch with their culture. I have seen many families where at least one parent is amrit-dhari but their daughters do very liberal things, like pre-marital stuff with guys, drinking, dressing half naked etc... Sometimes the fathers are too busy preaching and stuff to actually give a d**n about their families own izzat. I would respect a traditional family instead of those kinds anyday It is fortunate that even with a lack of knowledge of sikhi, some families are stuill better off with their characters and values PUNJABI ANNAKH NAAL JEONDEH NEH!!

our religion says nothing about marrying in your own religion..all it says is for you to marry into "good sangat" to seek the company of those who you believe are good humans
it is up to you to define what is good and what is not...the individual has alot of responsibility in this regard...you are only responsible for yourself..we are individuals mr londonjattlion..if someones daughter does some things you deem bad, that does not make them bad by default
all the rest of this stuff is BS
you got people who think they are being good sikhs by making sure their daughters marry a jatt/chumar watever n crap...and they totally miss the point of the religion

just to clarify.....no the guru ji did not say these things. They are however part of the Sikh Reht Maryada, which was released by the Sikh Panthic committee. So to cut a long story short they are not the words of the guru but the words of the corrupt organisation which heads Sikhi today.
