Ok, i've been listening to Balle for a few days now to try and find more things to like about it, but in all honesty i'm not that impressed with it, which is a real shame because personal expectations were HUGE after his debut solo album Gal Sun Ja little over a year and a half ago.
Without going into a track-by-track scrutiny of it, my first thoughts were that production on the album was tight, which is something that we have come to expect of Shinda after 200+ album credits to his name. And secondly, it shows how his superb vocal talent has developed and matured, along with its ability to switch between a range of styles, something which Shinda has never primarily lacked.
Personal highlights of the album were the efforts of Akhian and Pehle Souchley, which for me, stood out from the rest of the listing and made me think that perhaps they shouldn't belong on the album, such was the difference in vocals, composition and flow. His gazals mid-way through the concluding track are simply breathtaking and even now send a jolt down my spine. It signifies the calibre of Shinda's vocals and is proof to all those critics that his vocal ability is second to none. How many other singers in the industry can do that? A dying breed, it has to be said.
Much of the time, the slower songs on an album get overlooked for the faster, dance floor-orientated, MC-laden tracks, which is a shame because much of the time they are the shining stars on an album. I thought Boliyan paakey featuring HMC was a poor sequel to the monster smash hit Sohni lagdi, and is proof of how precarious it can be in attempting to follow up such a hit.
All in all, it takes nothing away from the rest of the album which i thought was okay, however Shinda is not a man i'd associate with "okay". His standards are far greater than many artists dare dream, but i feel that he has fallen short of the benchmark that he set with Gal Sun Ja.
As the industry stands, Balle is well worth its price tag and eclipses its competition. However, cynical or not, i expected much more from the "music man" that they call Sukshinder Shinda.
