Album : Sparked
Artist : Northern Lights
Label: VIP Records
This album is the second release from VIP records following up on the success of ‘Party Time’ by DJ Vips. Northern Lights consists of 2 talented individuals ( Lil Dev & Tarv) and as the name suggests are from the north. (No, not Bradford! Scotland Aye!). Sparked features some of the best Panjabi Vocalists around at the moment, offering attention-grabbing names. But would the production do them justice?
‘Janaab’, which features Tanveer Gogi, gives the album a startling introduction. The track itself is a very strong, well written song. The production is also strong and seems to suit the song perfectly. ‘Wrong Number’ is a exquisite piece of work. Using the vocals of Fauvi Ravpur, the track flows benevolently, giving a pleasant start to an album that by now already had my full attention.
The next track gives the album something different. From the opening two tracks I thought I could expect similar types of beats for the rest of the album. However ‘Billo Tere Nakreh’ totally caught me off guard. A delightful tune performed by Labh Janjua, however it’s the production of the track that really throws this track into the spotlight. It’s the type of song that puts you in a wicked mood just by listening to it.
The album seemed to have a great start but somehow was getting better and better with each track. By the time I heard ‘ Aashiq Dig Dig’ I was in pure musical ecstasy. This track is easily one of the tunes of 2005. Kaka’s vocals, interweaving with the simple but very effective production, catapult this tune towards the top end of the list of ‘Best Tracks of 2005’. It’s one of those tracks that you never seem to get bored of. A sublime track.
Other tracks to please included ‘Mittae Gunneh’ and ‘Ni Umiye’ and of course, Lember makes his usual appearance with ‘Matador’. It’s not often an album comes along and surprises the public with quality. For my money this has got to be up there with the best releases of this year. Tigerstyle, who also have a bonus remix featured on this album, started the emergence of Scottish based talent in terms of producing. DJ Vips came along earlier this year to prove Tigerstyle were not a one off. Now, Northern Lights are doing our friends to the north proud by releasing such a classy product.
Simply a Must buy album.
