Kisna (The Warrior Poet), the new film from writer-director Subhash Ghai, director of Taal.
An adventurous love story set in the British Raj, Kisna is a mix of fiction and fact based on a relationship that happened between a British girl and an Indian boy in 1947. Of the film, Subhash says “We had heard a lot of stories about hatred between the Indians and the British who ruled India for two hundred years. That’s when I met this group of British citizens who had amazing stories to tell about India, about its magnificent culture, divine energies, great human values in spite of diversity and….strong belief in loyalty, sacrifice, love and respect for relationships”.
Vivek Oberoi, Antonia Bernath and Isha Harvani, ably supported by Polly Adams, Michael Maloney, Om Puri and Amrish Puri, lead a multicultural cast. The critically acclaimed music is by the dream team of A R Rahman and Devdas musical director Ismail Darbar. As Eastern Eye says “the one thing all of Subhash Ghai's films have in common is that they have great music” and it has been voted best music of the year (2004) by IndiaFM.
The story follows Kisna (Oberoi), a young and poor rural boy from Pauri Garhwal, situated in the Himalayan foothills of Northern India. An ordinary native with the extraordinary traits of the legendary Lord Krishna, he evolves into a hero for the family of his British masters during a time of crisis as turmoil engulfs the British Raj occupied India of 1947. Kisna is a poet by heart but a warrior by actions whose life touches both Katherine (Bernath), the beautiful daughter of the British Deputy Commisioner, and Luxmi (Harvani), the granddaughter of a great classical singer of Pauri Garhwal.
