THE BLUE UMBRELLA WORLD PREMIERES AT THE PUSAN FILM FESTIVAL
UTV’s film The Blue Umbrella, directed by Vishal Bhardwaj, will have its world premiere at the Pusan International Film Festival in South Korea this October. The Pusan Festival provides the ideal platform for the film as it showcases the best of Asian talent and far ahead of other Asian festivals in terms of impact and influence.
The Blue Umbrella is yet another example of UTV Motion Pictures' commitment to being a true studio model by embracing a variety of genres and combining commercial sensibilities with aesthetic filmmaking.
The Blue Umbrella, is an adaptation of a Ruskin Bond novella and was brought to UTV by Vishal Bhardwaj, whose previous filmed adaptation Maqbool – an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth - enjoyed critical acclaim at the Berlin and Toronto Film Festivals in 2003.
The Blue Umbrella is a unique representation of human frailties. It is an allegorical tale of a mystical umbrella and its effect on an idyllic mountain village and its inhabitants. More particularly it focuses on the relationship between a crotchety old man and a ten year-old girl, who both fall under the spell of the umbrella. These two main characters are essayed with ease by veteran actor and National Award winner Pankaj Kapur and newcomer Shreya Sharma, a Shimla debut young actress with astounding talent. The film also stands out visually, owing to the stunning filming locations at Dalhousie at the foothills of the Himalayas.
Ultimately The Blue Umbrella is a bittersweet film of universal appeal, which transcends age, language and traditional genre barriers.
