Hidden Depth review
11th February 2005, Pranay Records released their 2nd album. The album introduces 2Dark, the brother of the International Bhangra star puria. 12 tracks on the album, 7 new songs & 5 (re-licked) re-produced songs by 2Dark, it was originally an 8 track album but the extra 4 songs added I hear from Pranay Records, have been produced by 2Dark for the India market & released on this album as bonus songs.
The video to this album has been played on all the Bhangra channels since end of 2004, it’s a Ballistic productions video, another good video from the /2Dark/Ballistic combination but they need a change as the ideas, locations & whole theme of Ballistic is looking too similar in every video but this is one of their better videos.
Anticipation for this album was building since June ’04, release dates kept changing, songs were being added & taken off. Will the album hit the worldwide heights of puria’s solo album? Was the album worth the wait?
Let’s start with the cover, it has a picture of 2Dark in a sporty top, the picture has a remarkable resemblance to ‘Juan Sebastian Veron’ the powerhouse ex-Man United & Argentina midfielder. Back to the album, Hidden Depth kicks off with ‘Puth Punjab Da’, one of the main dance floor Bhangra tracks on the album. puria is on the vocals, after having 2004 as his year in Bhangra to his name. Having huge hits like ‘Tumka II, Gal Sun & Ranjha Jogi’ on his list of smash hits, the expectations are very high. He lays down a powerful & faultless vocal display, starting the song off with a ‘Haik’ in true desi style, this really is a traditional Bhangra song & the beat is slightly different on the Dhol to the normal beat used, so that’s refreshing to hear. Not as catchy as the Ranjha Jogi’s or Tumka’s, still a top song & one for the Desi heads. Great start to the album.
The second track is ‘Vang Warga, sung by Bunty Dallewala, a fresh new vocalist from Punjab, lyrics by Jaskaran Dulai. More of a simpler Bhangra tune, production by 2Dark is good but simple. Doesn’t hit me but one that might grow on some & not others. Good to see other singers appearing on the album rather than the typical Lehmbar’s, Rakesh & Arshi’s.
Again we’re blessed with puria on this song ‘Judhon Yaad Meri’, meaning ‘when you remember me’. This is an amazing sad song, showing off the vocal range of ‘puria’ which makes it possibly absolutely the best tune on the album, singing wise. Sad songs are the hardest to sing, as it’s all about holding your vocal key. has sung this wonderfully. Lyrics are very deep, touching & moving. One point that has to be highlighted is all the lyrics for puria songs are written by him, which is amazing for a UK raised artist but this has song has some real special lyrics & put’s him right up there as a top UK songwriter. A certain hit in India, where they love their sad songs. Quite simply a great track!
Char Ke Chubaray, features another relatively new singer from Punjab Major Mahunwalia. Major sings this song pretty well, the production of 2Dark again is top draw. Predominantly Desi Bhangra tune & one for the parties.
When you hear the name ‘puria’ & the word ‘Tumka’, you think of one of 2004’s biggest Bhangra dance floor hits ‘Tumka II’…well, this is another fine hit track, ‘Tera Tumka Sohniyeh’ re-sung by & produced by 2Dark. The tempo is a touch faster, which works in their favour as it gives the track a little more kick, not that it needs one. The melody of this tune is catchy & one which instantly gets you dancing, production again is very good. Another very highly rated track.
The sound of the album is becoming very traditional, all 5 of the previous tracks have been ‘desi’, although very good, it needs something a little different to break the album up & gets it. Pavan Pali, another new name from Punjab sings track 6. The singing is Qawali style, the production is hip-hop (with no samples). A good quality production which shows the versatile production range of 2Dark.
Puth Punjab Da re-mixed version introduces U.S based rapper Dark Vader. The first mc/rapper track of the album. Not as strong as the desi version, if I had to chose between the two. The rappers lyrics go well with ’s lyrics , which is good to see, as they make sense, unlike a lot of mc lyrics. If you like the Urban genre of music, this track is one for you. Very well produced track.
My least favourite track off the album. Major Mahunwalia returns on the vocals but this track is nowhere near as strong as the others. Singing is not the best & this isn’t 2Dark’s best production on the album either, a filler track., one I had to skip, sorry guys. Slightly lets the album down.
On to the bonus puria tracks. ‘Chanjar Da Shankara (2K5 Mix)’, is a reproduced track off the puria debut album. Nice, dancey number but not one that stands out as his best on this album, never the less a very good track.
These are re-worked or re-mixed tracks BUT ‘Mina Mina ( Mix)’ is excellent. Well sung by , heavy base line & catchy tune. Definitely another big hit on the album, a song you can play on repeat. I can see this song being played at the gigs to rock the foundations. It’s another huge tune. A puria production with a Frantic studio sound, similar to the anthem Tumka II. This songs gives the album a good variety. No doubt this is a huge hit track!
This is the tune which sent the fans dancing like wild at a recent performance. ‘Lak Tera, Lak Tera’. Another favourite of mine. Nice melody, very powerful Bhangra tune. Re-produced track off ‘puria The Album’ ’03. Great job by & 2Dark, singing & producing another real gem of a track, nothing more needed to be added.
Final track of the album, a remix. returns to bless the mic. Not desi but a sure smash hit ‘Tera Tumka Sohniyeh’ – The Mumbai Mix. A long name but an instant hit. The minute this tune hit’s you ears, you know it’s a big big hit. You will be playing this loud in your cars. 2Dark shows off the talent that brought us the International smash hit ‘Ranjha Jogi/desi mix’. Top tune to end the album.
Hidden depth, why name it that? Quite simply because there’s a hidden talent named ‘2Dark’ with alot of depth to his musical ability. If you’re a puria, traditional Bhangra or 2Dark fan, don’t miss this, if you’re a fan our Urban/MC/Bhangra then this is not for you. Top album & value for money with 12 tracks & no samples!! If it wasn’t for tracks 2 & 8, the album would have got 9.5/10 but nevertheless a top debut by 2Dark & I’m sure there’s a lot more to come from him in the future.
Rating : 8.75/10
