For the first time ever the BBC Asian Network has teamed up with the Mayor of London and the Ealing and Hounslow Council as the main media partner for the London Mela, taking place on Sunday 13th August 2006 at Gunnersbury Park, Ealing London.
The London Mela is a free major one-day family festival that celebrates the creativity and culture of London’s Asian communities. With six stages and a mix of modern and classical music, dance, visual arts, street theatre, fashion shows, crafts and food stalls, the London Mela is a unique celebration for all to enjoy.
The BBC Asian Network’s presence at the event will include host of the main stage, presented by BBC Asian Network presenters Sonia Deol & Murtz and DJ Kayper as an on stage DJ.
Mark Strippel, Head of Music and Live Events of the BBC Asian Network, said,
"Our involvement with London Mela marks the first in a number of BBC Asian Network events taking place in the capital this year. Though one of the youngest melas in the country it has proved to have real depth in diversity and a fresh approach that resonates with our new direction as a station. As well as hosting the Main Stage, the London Mela will see the London debut of our brand new live events 'Station Wagon', hosting sets from all of our specialist DJ's"
The Main stage will offer performances from singer Pascal of Bollywood a French singer who crosses cultures with his passion for Bollywood songs and Atif Aslam, a Pakistan rock star who makes his UK debut. For the first time in two decades the Mela brings together the legendary British Bhangra group Chirag Pechan. Original band members Amarjit Sidhu and Mangal Singh inspired a generation and will come together for a special one off concert. Also appearing on the main stage are singer Ajay, female rappers Hard Kaur and Alyssia & Ms Scandalous, British Asian group Mentor Kolektiv, Sher Miandad Qawwal and Menis & Nazza T.
Ajay Chhabra, Artistic Director of the London Mela, said:
“The London Mela is unique in its ability to stand out from the crowd and we’re looking forward to working with BBC Asian Network on what promises to be a fantastic day for all. As an artistically-led multi-artform festival, we’re presenting the most comprehensive Mela programme you’ll find anywhere, with something for every generation of every community.”
The station will provide live broadcasts of all the acts performing on the main stage a week after the event. Also at the Mela will be the BBC Asian Network’s ‘Station Wagon’ a converted ambulance offering live DJ sets from Nerm, Mentor Kolektiv, Panjabi Hit Squad, Bobby Friction, Pathaan and DJ Kayper. The BBC Asian Network tent will offer free music downloads from artists via the station’s listening posts.
