Man caught peddling animal pornography in Southall
Ealing Trading Standards and police officers descended on Southall Broadway at the weekend and seized more than £15,000 worth of fake dvds, including a number depicting animal pornography.
The haul of around 2,000 discs, including music cds, was part of a successful joint operation on Saturday (March 11) between Ealing Council Trading Standards, the Southall Broadway Safer Neighbourhoods Team and the Immigration Service.
Three people were arrested following the raids on five premises, two for trading illegal goods – including brand new Bollywood features and a handful of Hollywood titles. One of the men arrested was found with animal pornography in his posession. The third man was arrested for immigration offences only.
In one of the premises raided, officers found a huge haul of fake dvds hidden beneath false floorboards under the shop counter. Officials also seized 100 fake watches and 30 fake toys during the raids.
The men arrested for trading illegal goods face prosecution under the Video Recordings Act 1984, with a maximum fine of £20,000, and the Trademarks Act 1994, which has a maximum jail term of 10 years and unlimited fines.
Mohammed Tariq of Ealing Trading Standards said: “The successful outcome of this joint operation is a warning to traders that continue to flout the law and sell illegally copied dvds and cds in Ealing.”
Police Sergeant Shahid Malik, Southall Broadway Safer Neighbourhoods Team, added: "This is an excellent example of partnership working. It portrays the results, which can be achieved through information sharing and intelligence led partnership operations.
“We will continue to work in partnership to specially target and ultimately stop local crime networks that are involved in counterfeit activity in Ealing borough."
David Martin, Director of Anti Piracy at the BPI, said: "I am very grateful for the professional work undertaken by these agencies. Music and film piracy of Bollywood repertoire is a serious problem not only affecting music and film companies but also hitting hard those genuine traders who employ personnel in the local community of Southall."
