MONTREAL - A Sikh teenager accused of threatening two fellow classmates with a ceremonial dagger is taking the stand in a Montreal courtroom today.
The 13-year-old has pleaded not guilty to three counts of assault using a kirpan. The teen says he never took out the kirpan or removed it from its wrapping until police arrived to question him.
Witnesses have offered contradictory testimony as to what happened off school property during the lunchtime tiff last September.
In 2006, the Supreme Court of Canada struck down a Montreal school board's ban on the wearing of the kirpan.
