Cast: Tabu, Raghuvir Yadav, Sandhya Shetty, Kunal Kapoor
Director: M.F. Hussain
Music: A.R.Rahman
An Urdu novelist Nawab (Raghuvir Yadav) is in search of a subject to write a story. During his sister's wedding he chances upon Meenaxi (Tabu) one look at her and he knows that she will be the perfect character for her novel. Though he has never spoken with Meenaxi just a glimpse he makes her the central character and starts weaving his story around her. Meenaxi acquires a whole new persona in his stories and he supposes her at places like Prague, Jaisalmer and Hyderabad. And suddenly one day Meenaxi comes to life out of the book out of the stories. Instead of being a humble character she defies Nawab's imagination and keeps on swapping characters, situations and places. This leaves Nawab bewildered and it seems to him that his quest for a perfect woman for his perfect novel will never cease.
Tabu is M.F.Hussain's current fascination as the artist explains in his own mystic way that Tabu represents the woman of today. So, this film will be easy for a common man to comprehend with. Hussain's also penned a qawalli for this venture that is sung by famous Ustad Ghulam Mustafa to the tunes of A.R.Rahman. The film also incorporates one Malayalam song written by O.N.V Kurup. Cinematography is by Santosh Sivan and we know the magic that he works on his films. Hussein has been influenced by famous Italian filmmaker Roberto Rosellini's style of film-making.
Meenaxi will see a fine actress Tabu in three different roles as she plays three distinct women characters from three variant cities of Prague in Czech, Jaisalmer in Rajasthan and Hyderabad. The three characters are a completely in contradiction to each other. Other than Meenaxi- A tale of three cities she is also playing the role of Lady Macbeth in the first ever adaptation of Shakespeare's Hamlet in Mian Maqbool. Raghuvir Yadav is just another asset for the movie and Miss India finalist Sandhya Shetty essays a deaf and dumb dancer who is Tabu's friend and communicates through her hand gestures.
Hussein's first film Gajagamini was as abstract as most art forms and lets hope that Meenaxi is as colorful and intelligible as his paintings.
