Bhangra Compilations are rarely ever made to suit everybody tastes due to record labels having thir own artistes for their own albums and not allowing their work to feature elsewhere…..so I doubt that we are going to ever get a NOW that’s what I call Bhangra album but hey, you never know !! ;D
More to the point, the punjab2000 team landed a Bhangra compilation in my lap featuring both new and old songs, and they said ‘Baja…..you’ve been a bit slack lately so make yourself useful and review this’. Here’s the Baja brakdown, track by track !!
Gerra
This is a feature tune on the album as it is really a showcase for Harvey Sahota (formerly of Punjabi X) from his forthcoming debut album as a solo artist and what he has produced with the sweet vocals of Manwinder Bawa. The intro is that of Sean Paul (sampled with clearance ?? ) the music continues to hold a Sahota-esq beat and rhythm that we know of from The Sahotas themselves and Harveys very own track ‘Kudi Punjaban’ with reggae type breaks and beats
It’s a funky track that may work on the dance floors but I personally think its more of a listening track.
Gal Dil Di
This is a fairly average track that uses the garage beat with a dhol. Featuring the vocals of Soni Pabla and produced by Joti Dhillon (from the album Behind the Scenes). The track is one with a quite a mellow feel to it but nothing that will ‘rock your roti’. Also, the mc’ing is not really up to scratch…..but hey……not many MC’s in this market are !! ;D
Koka
Again, this track is produced by Joti Dhillon from his debut album with the vocals of Sukhdev Darapuria. It’s a cover of the classic Manak track that’s kept quite simple with the chal of the Dhol and the first few seconds of music from PMC’s, ‘Jind Mahi’ throughout the track.
I’m one for re-fixes on old skool tunes if they are done justice in terms of production, sound engineering, vocals and overall quality. On this ocassion, it’s passable but nothing to shout about. Again, one just to listen to and maybe to dance to after a few shots of bacardis and cokes with a piece of chicken…….burrrrraaa !!
Dhol Utte Dugga
Taken from the album Dhol Cutz, if you haven’t heard it., where have you been hiding !! (It’s the one that goes ‘Kuriya Neh Payia Bhangra’)
Its features the crazy vocals of Kuldip Manak and holds such a wicked beat and flow that rock ny roti and sabji in one go - simply beautiful…
Hara Lage Na
From Navo Saro’s 2nd album, ‘Ik Pal’ it features the vocals once again of Sukhdev Darapuria.
More of a tune geared for the clubs using a drum and bass beat. Try putting this on at a desi party and it may end up with DJ getting a somosa or two getting chucked a him ………however, I think it’s definitely got an appeal for the Asian clubbers on the scene…….not a hit but neither a miss.
Bhangray Penday
The vocals of the legendar Surinder Shinda are bought home for this under the production of Taz Dhillion on this. The track is sub-standard with a continuous Dhol and tumbi throughout but it is the vocals of the man himself that carry this through.
Aja Bhabi
The re-hash on this (originally sang by the Waris Punjab Da himself Manmohan Waris) has been done justice by Usha Kiran on vocals and produced again by Taz Dhillon.
Brilliant production down to a tee and is a must for parties. ;D
I can see the old auntian and beebian doing the gidha rounds on this version !!
Teri Sadi
Produced by Taz Dhillon with the vocals of Amar Arshi – this is again a re-working of the original tune (which was fantastic) by Bally Jagpal on Dark and Dangerous. Quite a ‘middle of the road’ production with a blend of drum and dhoki beats on a fast pace but it just doesn’t do the job for me. If its not broken, why try and fix it - and if you try and fix it to make it go faster, it may just do the opposite you getz me…
Nachne Nu
Again fron the production camp of the Dhol Cutz crew featuring the Punjabi/desi vocals of Balwinder Matewaria, taken form the album Dhol Cutz 2, this track is awsome that proves that sometimes all you need is a Dhol and tumbi with some heavy vocals to make a track a success.
After hearing this, all you feel is ‘nachne nu chit karda’.
Gal Sun
With Nav Saro once again on the case alongside the vocals of Soni Pabala (again !!), this track definitely has deliverance from Soni himself and the tune is fresh in production which manages a fusion of western and desi vibes in one go that jump from fast and slow. It almost feels like desi Drum’n’bass.
Tere Naal
This track on the album from Dhol Cutz 2 (produced by the Dhol Cutz Crew) featuring once again the vocals of Balwinder Matewarian is mind-blowing. It really wants to make you get up and dance from the beginning as it carry such desi flavour (suitable for all occasions) and I personally rate the vocals of Mateawrian as raw and edgy.
Kudi Punjaban
Produced by and featuring the vocals of Harvey Sahota, this track is fron the album ‘Punjabi x’.
Again, Harvey as brought his own style and stamp to this track which gives it that fresh and funky beat which is both and dancable and listenable on the same level.
Overall, this is quite a good album that has taken select cutz from young and old artistes on the Music World Label for producers to experiment and develop
Desi.com is now available to buy from all good Asian record shops or online on www.punjab2000.co.uk
Overall rating: 7/10
